Hills Examination / Opinion

Examination notes: 1st set of notes: It is a rough but exquisite portrait of what seems to be a warm matron. Johnson used a very dry technique and scumbling. For example, the forehead is a pattern of dry squiggles. There is a faint outline around her hair lines on both sides. Firm chin, soft eyes, nose done well in terms of light and shadow. Tiny, tiny dot as a highlight on her right eye. Collar—fluffy but firm strokes. All of this is characteristic of Johnson’s small works. Background typical—generalized with no strong shadowed areas.
Condition: There is a slight, barely noticeable diagonal scratch from the right cheek to the lower right. Also a tiny dent at the upper left (2 inches from the left).
Oil on canvas, 10 x 8 1/8 inches. Note that key is missing, so that canvas has expanded to 8 1/8 inches. Probably meant to be 10 x 8.
