Throughout the modern period artists have learned their craft by copying other artists, and Johnson was no exception. When he returned to the United States in 1855, after going to Europe to learn to paint, he still chose to copy artworks by modern European artists. Hills, 2022: John I. H. Baur likely knew this work because it was photographed at the Brooklyn Museum, where he was head of the Department of Painting and Sculpture from 1936 to 1952, but it is not included in his 1940 catalogue of Johnson's work.
MacGibeny, 2021: The source which inspired this painting, El Jaleo by John Singer Sargent (Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum), is dated 1882.
