31.4 U.S. Portraits, Women, Unidentified

The identities of the women in these portraits have not yet been confirmed. However, the paintings are known or believed to have been done in the United States based on factors including their style, inscribed dates, and the appearance of the sitters when images are available. Johnson painted the vast majority of his oil portraits after he returned to the United States from Europe in 1855. —AM

Hills Examination / Opinion
Examination date(s): March 30, 1971; December 12, 1988
Examination notes: 1971: Very sketchy. Soft focus. Formula lips. Red squiggles on left.

1988: Rather soft. Smooth surface (like Crisco has been spread over it). Creamy yellow - added later? Elongation of nose. Middle tones - filled in. Scumbling - [ ]. Soft focus - but "beady" eye effect behind - pinpoint highlights on pupils. Mouth - full Cupid's bow lips.
