09.3 Black Children and Adolescents
During the 1860s Johnson painted Black men, women, and children that bestow on them dignity, intelligence, and grace. Many in his family, including his sister Harriet May and her husband Reverend Joseph May were ardent abolitionists. To Johnson, Blacks were not subjects to be ridiculed or satirized. —PH

Examination notes: 2006-09-30 Clifford Chieffo: "Perhaps girl in blue in OK Home." No graphite lines—prominent bone structure: highlights on bone over brow. Nice mouth—pursed. Reflected light on under arm. Pink dress. Child has ring on finger. Surface—pebbly—like other academy boards. She holds a tin(?) bowl. Definite line—not graphite on neckline. Wall with cracks. Green boards in back.
